Have you ever had a fall pumpkin recipe you really wanted to make, only to realize you didn't have enough of your store bought pumpkin spice blend? I've got you covered with this 5-Ingredient Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend! This pumpkin spice recipe is so easy to make and you can double, triple or ever quadruple it to your liking. You'll never worry about running out of pumpkin pie spice ever again!
What is Pumpkin Spice?
Pumpkin spice is not a new thing. According to this article by Food and Wine, the simplest version of pumpkin spice has been around since the late 1700s! However, it wasn't until the 1930s that spice companies began to sell pumpkin spice as a blend.
A typical pumpkin spice blend like my 5-Ingredient Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend is a combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice, though some versions may omit the allspice or cloves.
Fun fact: a couple of years ago I was at a trivia night with friends, and one of the questions asked was, "what is the primary spice in pumpkin spice?" As the dietitian/cook/baker in the group, I correctly answered "cinnamon!" That was my ONLY contribution to the group that night, but at least I was right! So I can say with confidence no matter what version of pumpkin spice you make or purchase, cinnamon is the primary spice used in pumpkin spice.
This combination of warm, slightly sweet spices is perfect for anything and everything pumpkin, from pumpkin spice lattes to your grandma's homemade pumpkin pie!
